Is hiring a house cleaner worth it in Charleston?
· Updated

You did not move to the Lowcountry to spend Saturdays on baseboards. But "hire a cleaner" is easy advice to give and harder to act on, mostly because it is difficult to tell in advance what you would actually be getting.
So it is worth separating the two questions. Is outsourcing the work worth it, and how do you tell a premium service from a cheap one before you have paid either?
What you are actually buying
Not a clean house. You can get a clean house yourself, and if you have a free morning and the right supplies you can get a very good one.
What you cannot easily give yourself is a clean house that arrives without your involvement, on a schedule, at a standard that does not depend on how tired you were that week. The thing being purchased is that the job leaves your head entirely.
A thorough clean of an average home takes three to five hours of steady work. Every week or two, that is most of a morning. Whether handing it off is worth the money depends on your own situation and nobody can do that arithmetic for you. But it is a real trade, and it is the trade, rather than the cleaning itself, that people are weighing.
What separates a premium service from a cheap one
Mostly not the vocabulary. Every cleaning company in Charleston describes itself as premium. Four things are actually checkable before you book:
- A published checklist. Ours has 35 tasks, and it is on the site. A standard clean covers 27 of them, a deep clean 33, a move-out 32. If a company will not tell you what a visit includes, the answer changes visit to visit.
- A price before you commit. Not an hourly rate that becomes a number at the end, not a range, not "starting at". You should see the figure and then decide.
- Vetting you can name. Every cleaner clears a criminal background check, a Social Security number trace, a national sex offender registry search, and global watchlist screening, plus an interview and reference verification, before a first job. BeeLux and our cleaners are licensed and insured, verified annually.
- No long-term contract. Confirming one clean should commit you to one clean. A discount that depends on locking you in is not a discount.
Every one of those is verifiable from outside the company. That is the point of the list.
What Charleston homes need in particular
Older Lowcountry housing stock has its own problems. Deep window casings and original trim collect buildup where a fast pass never reaches. Coastal humidity works mildew into grout through the summer. Pollen and marsh dust settle on baseboards and ceiling fans for weeks at a stretch.
None of that needs specialist equipment. It needs a visit long enough to reach the detail areas, which is the difference between a deep clean and a standard one, and it is why most Charleston homes start with the former.
If your home has surfaces that need particular handling, say so in the booking notes. You can also ask for specific products or brands, or provide your own vacuum or specialty items, and that request travels with the booking.
How most people end up doing it
A deep clean first, to reset the house and to see what the standard looks like in your own rooms. Then a recurring plan, usually every other week, because a home that never accumulates buildup takes far less work to maintain than one that does.
Recurring plans save 20% weekly, 15% every other week, and 10% monthly, applied to every visit, and you can stop whenever you want.
